I took a shoemaking course and made these desert boots from scratch. I did not make the pattern, the instructor did. They were made specifically for my feet, which is totally awesome. These were partly sewn by hand and partly sewn on an industrial leather machine (I don't know what model). The top is leather reinforced with suede, midsole is leather and sole is rubber.

Oh wow! What an amazing project! I just bought a leather foot. Will start with a wristband and a pouch. But definitely my dream is to be making shoes one day. I assume the instructor measure your foot and then somewhat adjusted the pattern?

    threequarterkate replied 6 years ago

Yes, she traces and measures the foot and drafts a flat pattern based on a formula she wrote. They have pattern drafting classes at the school too. I'm hoping to make a pair for my husband and daughter soon.

How freakin' cool is that to actually make a pair of shoes? I'm jealous and you did a fab job!!!

Did you take the class at the Chicago School of Shoe Making.....? I hope so - those are so cool and I'm taking the class next month!

    threequarterkate replied 6 years ago

Yes, that's where the class was. I loved it! I saved up for it for a long time and it was totally worth it. You'll love the class! Get online and look up styles for desert boots so you have ideas going in because there are so many options for thread color, leather color, hardware, etc. My second pair of shoes will be more adventurous, I just thought the first should be classic if I plan to keep them forever.

Gosh, your desert books are making me swoon, they're utterly awesome!  Wish I lived near enough to the Chicago School of Shoe Making to take the course.

Stewart Allen replied 6 years ago

    Yay!!! I'm really so excited.
Ginny- I live in Richmond, Virginia and am flying in for a long weekend to attend the class. I, too, wish there was a leather school closer to me.

Paivi Kankaro replied 6 years ago

Ohh I definitely want to take one of these classes!

    threequarterkate replied 6 years ago

Ginny- Thanks! I'm pretty lucky that I just happen to live really close by (just a few miles). When I first got the idea that I wanted to make my own shoes, the nearest course was in Washington.
Stewart- If you need any tips on where to go while in Chicago, let me know.

    Thanks, Kate!
