Silver Square Toed Pumps
by Natasha Estrada Follow

I wanted to modify one of my basic shoe lasts with epoxy putty to create a square toed last so I could make some pumps similiar to the pointe shoe style pumps Prada had last year. I used a pewter Kangaroo leather for the upper that I got from Australia with some calfskin lining. The sole is oaktanned sole leather painted with acrylic leather paint. The insole is 1/16" cloud eva.

Recap

  • I modified a round toed ballet flat last with epoxy putty to give a square toed Prada like look. Here the uppers are sewn and ready to last and the counter and toe puff stiffeners are cut and skived. The little presser foot is the roller foot I use on my Bernina to handle  the leather. Note that the lining is untrimmed on the upper this is to help the lasting process. The midsole with metal shank has been made and attached to the last.

  • Close up of the stitching on the topline.

    Pretty perfect stitching.

  • The shoes have been lasted and sanded on the bottom. Cork is added to flll the spaces and also for comfort when wearing.

  • Sole has been attached and awaiting the heel. The sole ended up being a little smaller than it needed to be and you can see the sanded edges peeking out not ideal.

This is fascinating. I started to take a course in shoe making and didn't finish (yet). You really inspired me to pick that up again!

Oh you should. There are not enough people making shoes. Gets lonely *sniff sniff*
